As-Saf 61:9

“It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allāh dislike it.”

Essence

Allah sent His messenger with guidance and a true way of life meant to stand clear above every rival, whether or not that is welcomed.

A reflection

A road made plain, a heart turned, a hand leading

Hudā grows from a root the lexicons describe in layers. At its plainest, it means directing someone to a road and setting them right on it. The Arabs also used it for leading forward: a bride is led to her husband, a gift is brought to a man, and in an old line of poetry even the foot is said to lead the leg that follows it. One further view takes the root's core sense as inclining, so that 'guide us' carries something closer to 'incline our hearts towards the truth' rather than simply 'show us the way'. The word for a gift passed between kings, hadiyya, and al-hudā for the bright daytime hours in which people find their own way, both come from the same root.

Put these layers together and hudā is not only information handed over for a person to act on alone. It is a road made plain, a heart inclined towards walking it, and a hand leading the traveller forward, all held in one word. A messenger sent with hudā, as this ayah describes, is sent with more than a correct description of reality. He is sent as part of how a heart is turned and a step is taken.

This matters for how the rest of the ayah should be read. What is described as prevailing is not an argument winning a debate on points. It is guidance doing what guidance by its nature does: showing a road, inclining hearts towards it, and bringing willing travellers to where it leads.
