As-Saf 61:8

“They want to extinguish the light of Allāh with their mouths, but Allāh will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.”

Saheeh International

Essence

They aim their mouths at a light already far past the reach of any breath, and Allah will bring it to its fullness regardless of how much that is disliked.

A reflection

A breath aimed at a light past its reach

Ṭafiʾat al-nār is how the lexicons describe a fire whose flame has died and gone cold, the ordinary word for a candle put out. This same verb is used, twice in the Quran, for people wanting to put out Allah's own light with their mouths, here and in one other place. The commentaries read the comparison plainly: it is like someone trying to extinguish the light of the sun by blowing at it with their mouth. The attempt is not simply difficult. It is aimed at the wrong scale entirely, a single human breath against something sunlight itself cannot outmatch.

Mutimm comes from completeness: the root behind the full moon, badr tamām, a moon missing nothing from its edge and needing nothing more. Allah is named here as the One who brings His light to that same kind of fullness, regardless of how many mouths are aimed at it. Nothing about the effort mounted against Him changes what He was always going to bring to completion regardless.

There is a particular kind of self-importance this ayah quietly dismantles: the sense that my words, my cleverness, my campaign against a truth I dislike, carry real force against it. Most people who have tried to argue down something true, rather than simply walk away from it, have felt that same misplaced confidence, mistaking the loudness of their own breath for actual weight against the light they were aiming at. Allah needs no defending here. He is stating a fact that was never in doubt, for the comfort of people who might otherwise wonder whether the noise against them mattered more than it did, and for the quiet correction of anyone on the other side who had begun to believe their own breath carried more force than it ever actually did.
