Al-Qalam 68:19

فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَآئِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ

“So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.”

Saheeh International

Essence

While they lay completely unconscious, something from their Lord went all the way around what they had sworn to keep whole.

A reflection

Something that goes all the way round

Ṭāfa, went around, comes from a root for a thing turning upon a thing and enclosing it entirely: circling the House in worship, a night watchman going round every house in turn, a flood that covers everything in its path. Whatever this ṭāʾif, this visitation, actually was, its very name describes totality: not a strike at one corner of the garden, not a partial blight, but something that moved all the way around, leaving nothing inside its circuit untouched.

This matters set against what these men had sworn the evening before. Their oath, la-yaṣrimunnahā, promised a total, complete harvest, nothing left behind. The ṭāʾif that answers it is total in exactly the same way, a circuit that encloses the whole garden rather than damaging a portion they might have salvaged. Their own planned totality is met with an answering totality, matched precisely rather than merely exceeded.

A company that prides itself on total market dominance in its sector, having systematically squeezed out every smaller local competitor over a decade, discovers that a single new technology, arriving almost overnight, has made its entire business model obsolete in one circuit of change, with no corner of the old business spared to rebuild from.

The word itself, read carefully before the story even reveals what happened, already promises that whatever is coming will match, in scope, exactly what these men had intended to take.
