Al-Qalam 68:24

أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا ٱلْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌ

“[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The whole secret plan comes down to one sentence: make sure the person who already has nothing gets nothing from us today either.

A reflection

Guarding against someone already still

Miskīn, poor person, shares its root with sakan, stillness after agitation: wind that drops, a fire that dies down, a home a person settles into and rests. The lexicons describe the needy as miskīn because poverty has, in a real sense, stilled them, left them without the means to move freely through the world the way wealth and capability let other people move. The word does not picture aggression or demand. It pictures someone already quieted by circumstance.

Against that picture, these men's frantic secrecy, whispered plans, early rising, careful timing, reads as wildly disproportionate. An entire operation of concealment and urgency was mounted against someone the very word for them describes as already still, already without power, already in no position to take anything by force even if they had wanted to. The threat these men were defending against was never real in the way their precautions implied.

A gated community installs an elaborate, genuinely expensive new security system specifically designed to keep out a small handful of elderly residents from a nearby care home, residents who only ever occasionally walk quietly through the grounds to reach a calmer path down to the shops, the whole scale of this defence entirely out of proportion to anything remotely resembling an actual threat from the harmless people it was built to keep out.

This ayah's single word for who they were excluding quietly exposes the whole operation for what it actually was: not caution against a real danger, but effort spent making sure someone already without power stayed that way.
