Al-Qalam 68:43

“Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.[1733]”

Essence

The one invitation they could have answered easily, back when answering cost them nothing — that is the invitation they will remember too late.

A reflection

Flattened, not bowed down willingly

Khāshiʿatan, downcast, comes from a root the lexicons picture as low ground pressed flat: a khushʿa was a small hillock worn level by the wind, soft sand smoothed into the earth, a crumbling wall slumped until it was no longer anything a stranger would call a wall. The same root gives khushūʿ, the stillness of genuine humility in prayer — but there the flattening is chosen, a person deliberately lowering themselves before their Lord. Here, nothing is chosen. The eyes are simply pressed down, the way a wind-worn hillock settles without ever deciding to.

This is the difference worth sitting with: between a humility a person builds, ayah by ayah, bow by bow, and a humility that is finally done to a person who never built any of their own. A derelict wall at the edge of a field slumps so gradually that eventually it becomes just another contour of the ground, nothing left that anyone would recognise as having once stood upright. Its collapse took no courage and required no choice. It simply happened, the way neglect always eventually collapses whatever it is neglecting.

The eyes described here are khāshiʿah in exactly this second sense: not the humility of someone who bowed low on purpose, but the flattening of someone who never bowed at all, and is now being lowered regardless. There is a particular sorrow folded into a flattening nobody chose. A person who kneels on purpose can rise again whenever they choose to; the posture was always theirs to leave. A hillock worn down by weather has no such option, because the thing doing the wearing was never under its control to begin with. The eyes described here belong to this second condition entirely: not a humility that can be stood back up from, because it was never a humility anyone decided to practise while standing was still an option.
