Al-Haqqah 69:18

يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لَا تَخْفَىٰ مِنكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ

“That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.[1741]”

Saheeh International

Essence

On that Day you are laid out like goods at a market stall, every side shown, with nothing left in the packaging to hide behind.

A reflection

Laid out like goods at a stall

A trader at an old market does not display his goods wrapped and boxed. He lays them out flat, breadth shown rather than length, so a buyer can see the whole surface of what is on offer in a single glance, nothing angled away, nothing kept out of view behind something else.

That is the picture behind this ayah's tuʿraḍūn, you will be presented. The root means breadth, width, the full side of a thing turned outward and shown rather than concealed. Goods for sale are ʿaraḍa, laid out this way. A cloud spreading across the whole horizon takes the same name. This ayah uses that exact picture for a person's own reckoning: not called forward and questioned one detail at a time, but laid out, in full breadth, the way a trader lays out his entire stock at once.

That image changes what the reckoning actually involves. It is not primarily an interrogation, a careful back-and-forth where selective answers might still shape how things look. It is a display. Whatever was packaged carefully for public view across an ordinary life, the edited version shown to colleagues, the curated version shown online, the flattering version rehearsed for difficult conversations, is turned flat and shown in full on that Day, the way a trader's stock is shown, not the way a defendant's statement is given.

Most people spend real effort managing which side of themselves faces outward in any given room. This ayah describes a day with no rooms left to manage that in. Everything is simply laid out, breadth-first, exactly where any buyer, any judge, can see the whole of it at once.
