Al-Haqqah 69:27

يَـٰلَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلْقَاضِيَةَ

“I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.[1743]”

Saheeh International

Essence

A soul handed its record despairs so completely it wishes its first death had simply been the end of everything.

A reflection

The one word for truly finished

Al-qāḍiyah, the decisive one, the finishing one: the ayah's own word for a death that closes a matter for good.

The root behind it pictures work carried all the way through to its end. A poet described two coats of mail a smith had hammered and finished without flaw. A debt was settled this way: paid down to the last coin, nothing left owing between two people. A judge is named from the same root, because his ruling cuts a dispute clean and makes it hold. Death itself is counted among these finishings, since it comes to every child of Adam without exception.

So when the soul holding its record in the left hand cries out, yā laytahā kānat al-qāḍiyah, oh, if only it had been the finishing one, it is reaching for the one sense of this root it did not get. Its first death was certainly an ending. It finished this life, the choosing, the chances. But it was not qāḍiyah in the fuller sense the word carries elsewhere: complete, with no account left open, no further page to turn.

Picture a director who signs what he is sure is the final page of a company's liquidation, locks the office for the last time and drives home believing the matter is closed, only for a forensic review to reopen the file a year later with his signature on every irregular transfer he thought had gone into the ground with the firm. He wanted the closing to be the end of it. It was only the end of the part he could control.

That is the exact shape of the wish in this ayah. A grave looks final from the outside. It is the end of adding to a record. It was never going to be the end of that record being read. The question worth sitting with today is not how to find an ending that erases, but what kind of record you would not mind being final right now.
