Al-Haqqah 69:44

وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِ

“And if he [i.e., Muḥammad] had made up about Us some [false] sayings,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Even inventing just a fraction of what he claimed, one fabricated saying attributed to Us, would have been enough to trigger everything that follows.

A reflection

A deliberately low bar, named on purpose

Taqawwala is not the plain verb for speaking. Its form carries real effort inside it, the sense of forcing a saying into existence that was not naturally his to say, claiming authorship of words he manufactured rather than simply received. And the condemned content is not even the whole of what he brought: baʿḍa al-aqāwīl, some of the sayings, a mere fraction, named with a plural the grammarians read as deliberately diminishing, the same pattern used for trivial inventions and hollow jokes.

Put the two details together and the ayah sets an almost absurdly low threshold on purpose. Not a sustained campaign of fabrication, not even a majority of false claims mixed among true ones. A single invented fragment, however small, attributed to Allah falsely, is treated as sufficient grounds for total consequence.

That low bar is the entire point rather than an oversight. A claim hedged with escape routes, allowing for some error here, some embellishment there, invites exactly the suspicion this ayah refuses to leave any room for. By naming the smallest conceivable fabrication as already enough, the ayah stakes everything on total accuracy rather than asking to be judged on a forgiving curve.

Few people today would frame their own claims this way, risking everything on being caught in even one small untruth rather than allowing themselves room for minor, forgivable error. The starkness of the standard set here is itself worth noticing before anything else about this passage.
