Al-Qamar 54:9

۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَٱزْدُجِرَ

“The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.”

Saheeh International

Essence

They called him mad and shouted him down, and Allah called him something else: Our servant.

A reflection

"Our servant" is a title, not a chain

At a class for new Muslims, a woman bristles when the teacher uses the phrase "servant of Allah". I spent ten years getting free of a boss who owned my evenings, she says. I did not come here to sign up for another one.

It is an honest reaction, and the ayah is a good place to answer it. Allah does not call Nuh "Our messenger" here. He calls him ʿabdanā, Our servant.

The first hearers had strong pictures for this root. A road was muʿabbad when so many feet had walked it that it was worn smooth and level. It no longer resisted the traveller; it had become a way for others. A camel trained for errands was muʿabbad too. And a cloth woven with the densest, strongest weave was said to have ʿabada. So this lowliness is not frailty. One lexicon calls it humility at its furthest limit, which is why it is given to Allah alone. These pictures are established.

A classical theologian asks why the Quran so often joins righteous people to Allah with this word, when every creature is His servant anyway. He gives three answers. It is an honour, like "My House" or "Allah's she-camel". It names the one who actually worshipped, who fulfilled the purpose all were created for (51:56). And it implies exclusiveness: the servant who has no other master. Whoever follows his own desire, he says, has taken it as a god. The true servant is wholly for Allah, in eating, drinking and every affair.

That answers the woman's fear. Servanthood to Allah is the one service that ends every other. The boss, the bank, the opinion of others, the craving for approval: none of them owns the person who belongs to Allah alone.

And notice the setting. His people called him mad and drove him back. At that very moment of humiliation, Allah names him with honour. Their insult is answered not with argument but with a title.
