Al-Ma'arij 70:13

“And his nearest kindred who shelter him”
Saheeh International
Essence
Even the clan that sheltered him his whole life, his deepest safety net, he would give away to escape what is coming.
A reflection
A nest, not just a network
The word used here for shelter comes from a root describing a place of refuge, the kind a nest offers a bird or a den offers an animal, somewhere a creature returns to for safety when the wider world turns dangerous. Applied to a clan, it pictures the tribe not merely as a social network of useful contacts, but as the actual structure a person retreats into when nothing else in life feels safe.
That image fits seventh-century Arabia with real precision. A man without a clan had no court to appeal to, no protection against a stronger enemy, no one obligated to avenge a wrong done to him. The clan was not a nicety; it was survival itself, the one shelter standing between a person and total exposure to whoever might wish them harm.
This verse pictures that exact shelter, the deepest safety a man has ever known, offered up as payment on the one day every other shelter has already failed him. The horror compounds with every name added to this list: not just people he loved, but the very structure of safety itself, the nest he was born into and had always been able to return to, now wished away entirely, because nothing it ever offered him in this life has anything left to offer him on this one.
