Al-Ma'arij 70:33
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ
“And those who are in their testimonies upright”
Saheeh International
Essence
Standing upright with one's testimony, adding nothing, hiding nothing, and leaning for nobody, is named among the clear marks of the believers who were saved.
A reflection
Standing upright, not leaning either way
One word in this sentence describes seeing something with your own eyes, being present when it happened, and then saying so afterward, presence, knowledge and declaration folded into a single term. The other describes the posture of something standing upright: a person on their feet, a stick held straight, nothing slouching or tilted to one side.
Put together, the sentence pictures someone who was actually there, who actually saw, and who then stands up straight with what they saw rather than leaning it one way or another once speaking becomes costly. The commentators make the leaning explicit: no closeness to the person it favours, no hostility toward the person it harms, should tilt the account given.
That image of posture is doing real work. A witness can know the truth perfectly well and still deliver it bent, softened for a friend, sharpened against a rival, shaded just enough to avoid discomfort. This ayah asks for the harder thing: the same straight stance regardless of who the truth happens to help or hurt. Qā'imūn describes someone upright specifically because leaning is always the easier, more available option once a witness realises what honesty here is actually going to cost them.
A stick held straight requires nothing special to explain; it simply stands the way it was made to stand. A stick that leans always has a reason for leaning, some weight pressing on it from one side. The posture named here works the same way. Nobody drifts toward a bent account by accident; some pressure, loyalty, fear, dislike, has always been applied first. Standing straight is not really the effortful achievement here at all. It is simply what happens by default whenever nothing has been allowed to quietly push against it first.
