Al-Ma'arij · Makki · ayah 34 of 44
Al-Ma'arij 70:34
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ
“And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:”
Saheeh International
Essence
The list that opened by naming prayer never abandoned closes by naming prayer carefully completed, down to its smallest detail.
A reflection
Not the same word as the opening line
Eleven ayat earlier, this same list opened with prayer described by a different word, dāʾimūn, standing like still water, never abandoned at any time. Here the list closes on prayer again, but with a different verb, yuḥāfiẓūn, guarding or tending carefully. One classical explanation draws the line precisely: the first word names never leaving prayer for any stretch of time; this one names never leaving it careless in how it is performed, its proper timing, its washing beforehand, its pillars and its finer points all kept intact.
The fuller treatment of prayer's constancy, the still-water image behind the opening word and what it asks of a reader, belongs to that earlier ayah. What this one adds is the other half of the same discipline: showing up is not yet the whole of it. Someone can be scrupulously present for every single prayer and still perform it carelessly, rushed, incomplete, going through motions without attending to what each part of it requires.
