Nuh 71:10
فَقُلْتُ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارًا
“And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After every method of calling had been tried, Nuh finally tells his people the one thing left to say: ask forgiveness, He is ever forgiving.
A reflection
An instruction that costs Him nothing and gives you everything
Asking forgiveness can sound, to a tired or guilty ear, like a demand: come and confess, come and grovel, come and settle an account the way a creditor demands payment. This ayah is built the other way round. Nuh is not collecting something Allah is owed. He is handing his people the one door still open to them, free of charge, after every other approach has failed to move them.
Allah gains nothing from being asked, and loses nothing from being ignored, until the day the ignoring finally catches up with the one doing it. Ghaffār, forgiving again and again, describes an attribute that exists whether or not a single person in Nuh's audience ever uses it. The instruction to ask is not for His benefit. It is the one remaining route back to the safety his people have spent the whole surah running from.
Think of a surgeon who tells a frightened patient, after every gentler persuasion has failed, simply: 'say yes to the operation, it is not too late'. The surgeon gains nothing from the patient's consent beyond doing her job. The patient gains the one thing that could actually save them. The sentence sounds like an instruction. It functions as a lifeline, offered plainly because plainness, by this point, is the only kindness left to offer.
So when this ayah says 'ask forgiveness of your Lord', hear it the way the frightened patient should hear the surgeon: not as a demand made on you, but as the one door, after everything else has been tried, still standing open on your side, costing you only the asking and gaining the surgeon nothing but your own recovery.
