Nuh 71:9
ثُمَّ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَنتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًا
“Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly”
Saheeh International
Essence
Nuh did not settle on one method, but announced the same message publicly while still speaking it privately, one person at a time.
A reflection
The man after man, spoken to alone
One classical reading of this ayah pictures Nuh doing something specific with the private half of his method: taking individuals aside, man after man, speaking to each privately about what he wanted for them, rather than treating 'private calling' as one more broadcast delivered quietly to a crowd.
This is a different skill from the public address in the previous ayah, and Nuh runs both at once rather than choosing between them. A youth worker who leads a weekly group session for a dozen teenagers, and also keeps a short list of one-to-one check-ins for the two or three who will never say anything useful in front of the group, is practising the same combination. The group session reaches everyone with the same content. The quiet conversations reach the people for whom the group setting itself is the obstacle, not the message.
What makes this pairing effective rather than scattered is that both channels carry the identical aim. Nuh is not saying one thing in public and something softer or different in private to make the message easier to swallow one person at a time. The content holds steady. Only the delivery is adjusted to reach the specific person in front of him, whatever their reason for not responding to the open call.
Most outreach, in a classroom, a workplace, a family, fails not from a lack of sincerity but from relying on a single channel and assuming it should work for everyone equally. Nuh's example suggests the opposite: the same truth, carried by more than one method, because people do not all have the same door it can get through, and a single door, however well built, was never going to fit every one of them.
