Taha 20:55
۞ مِنْهَا خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ وَفِيهَا نُعِيدُكُمْ وَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ تَارَةً أُخْرَىٰ
“From it [i.e., the earth] We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The ground under your feet is your origin, your long lodging and your exit, and none of the three was ever your choice.
A reflection
Three addresses you never chose
A property developer stands on a cleared plot before the first pile is driven. His handmade shoes are sinking in grey mud. In two years his name will be lettered in brass above the entrance of a tower here. For now he is a man standing in wet earth, and the earth does not know his name.
This ayah has three verbs, and all three belong to Allah. We created you. We will return you. We will bring you out. The speaker is the One who owns every stage. You are the object of every sentence, never its subject.
That is the shape of majesty here. It is not a list of distant marvels in the sky. It is the soil under the developer's shoes. The commentaries read the first clause as the creation of Adam from the surface of the earth, so every human being shares that beginning. They read the second as burial after death, and the third as being raised for the reckoning.
Notice what this does to pride. Nobody chose the ground they came from. Nobody chooses the plot they will lie in. Nobody will choose the hour they are brought out. The three most important addresses in a human life are all assigned.
Ego lives on the feeling of authorship. I built this, I earned that, I decided the rest. The ayah does not insult that feeling. It simply sets it inside a larger frame. Your work is real, but it happens on borrowed ground, between two events you did not write.
The humble response is not to stop building. It is to build like a guest. A guest is careful with the host's floor. A guest says thank you. A guest remembers the visit ends.
The next time you stand somewhere you are proud of, look down. That is where you came from. That is where you are going.
