Nuh 71:4

“He [i.e., Allāh] will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allāh, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Forgiveness and more time are offered, but the deadline behind them is fixed: once it arrives, it will not move for anyone.

A reflection

A decree with no appeal and no bribe

Every human deadline has a back door. A tax return filed a day late can plead extenuating circumstances. A visa renewal can be appealed. Somewhere behind almost every fixed date sits a person with the discretion to bend it, for the right phone call, the right lawyer, the right excuse.

This ayah describes a deadline with no such door. Ajal Allāh, the term Allah has set, arrives and simply is not delayed, not by an hour, not for anyone, not for any reason. There is no office to appeal to, no clerk who might make an exception on a slow Friday.

It is worth sitting with how little of your own life works this way. Even death itself, the one fixed point most people assume cannot be negotiated, is still approached as negotiable in practice: the diet started the week after the diagnosis, the will written the week after the scare passes and life returns to normal. Something in us keeps expecting a back door to exist, because every other deadline we have ever met has had one.

A fair question follows close behind this. Doesn't a God who keeps announcing that His decree cannot be delayed sound like an insecure ruler, flexing a power nobody is allowed to question? Compare it with what makes a human show of force feel arrogant: it exists to be seen, to extract fear or compliance from people who would otherwise ignore the one making it. This decree asks nothing of the sort. Allah gains nothing from your believing it and loses nothing from your doubting it until the day it simply happens regardless. The statement is not posturing for an audience. It is the plain truth about a limit nobody, including the one announcing it, had any need to invent for effect.

The ego that needs to be told how powerful it is belongs to rulers who are not actually sure of their own power. A decree this plainly stated, by someone with nothing left to prove, is closer to a fact of weather than a threat. It simply is the shape of things, whether anyone is impressed by it or not.
