Nuh 71:3
أَنِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ
“To worship Allāh, fear Him and obey me.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Three commands, in order: worship Allah, guard yourself before Him, and follow the one sent to show you how.
A reflection
He asks for nothing He needs
Nuh's whole mission, boiled down, is this one sentence. Worship Allah. Guard yourself. Obey me. It would be easy to hear a demand in that, as though Nuh's people are handing something over to a God who is somehow short of it.
The Quran closes that reading elsewhere, and plainly: Allah wants no provision from His creation, and wants nothing fed to Him (51:57). Whatever worship is, it adds nothing to a kingdom that already lacked nothing. The transaction people imagine, their devotion in exchange for His favour, misreads which side of the exchange actually needs it.
Think of a personal trainer who tells a new client to show up three mornings a week. The trainer gains a session fee either way. The client gains strength, sleep, a body that works better at fifty than it would have otherwise. The instruction looks like it serves the trainer. It mostly serves the one following it.
Worship works the same way, pointed at someone who draws no fee at all. The remembrance of Allah is where hearts find rest (13:28); turning away from it narrows a life rather than freeing it (20:124). Nuh is not collecting something for a needy god. He is handing his people one instruction that costs them nothing and gives them everything, from someone who stands to gain nothing but their safety.
So when this ayah asks you to worship, hear it as you would a trainer's early-morning instruction from someone who has already seen what the alternative costs. The command exists for the one who follows it, not for the one who gave it.
