Nuh 71:5

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِى لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا

“He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day.”

Essence

After everything, Nuh takes the whole account to the only place it was ever going to help: straight to his Lord.

A reflection

Day and night, for a lifetime

The surah has already told us, by this point, that worship, guarding oneself and obedience were offered to Nuh's people, along with forgiveness and years added to their lives. Now, finally, we learn what it actually cost to offer all of that. Laylan wa-nahāran, night and day, with no season named as a break.

The sources read 'night and day' here as a picture of unbroken effort, not a tidy routine of fixed hours. Other ayat elsewhere in the Quran give the scale involved: a mission that ran a thousand years less fifty. Centuries, not a difficult decade. A lifetime longer than entire civilisations, spent on one unmoved audience.

Most long effort in a human life does not run anywhere near that scale, and still tests people well before the finish line. A community organiser spending fifteen years on a single cause, with no clear turning point yet in sight, can be forgiven for wondering some mornings whether any of it is doing anything at all. The difference between giving up in year fourteen and reaching year fifteen is rarely a difference in evidence. It is a difference in what the person decided effort was actually for.

Nuh's complaint, voiced here to Allah rather than swallowed in silence, is not the collapse of his resolve. It is the honest cost of having kept it going this long. The sources treat this ayah as the record of a man still at his post, still calling, simply naming out loud what that has actually required of him.

There is comfort here for anyone carrying a long, unglamorous effort with no end yet visible: the exhaustion itself is not evidence of failure. It may be the exact shape faithfulness takes when it is measured in centuries rather than weeks, and when the one measuring it was never going to be the public.
