Al-Muzzammil 73:12

إِنَّ لَدَيْنَآ أَنكَالًا وَجَحِيمًا

What is held in reserve is not Allah performing cruelty; it is the exact, external shape of a bondage some people are already living in, unchained.

Held, not threatened loosely

Inna ladaynā ankālan wa jaḥīmā. With Us are shackles and a blazing fire.

Not 'there will be'. Ladaynā, with Us, already held, already in reserve. The ego of a person who mocks and denies tends to picture itself as answerable to no one, free to say what it likes about whoever it likes, with no ledger being kept anywhere. This ayah states, plainly, that a ledger exists, and that it sits with the one whose authority the ego was busy pretending did not reach it.

This is not Allah needing to intimidate anyone into belief. He is al-Ghani, free of all need (35:15); nothing a denier says reaches Him, and nothing a believer says adds to Him. What this ayah actually dismantles is a much smaller, much more ordinary form of self-importance: the quiet assumption, shared by almost everyone at some point, that if a wrong goes unpunished long enough, it must not really be a wrong at all. That assumption is precisely what Majesty corrects. The consequence has not vanished because it has not yet arrived. It is already held.

The comfortable mockers of 73:11 were given a little respite in the very last ayah. This one says plainly what that respite was protecting them from, and what patience was buying them time to turn away from. A King who delays a sentence is not a King without one.

There is a particular kind of arrogance that only shows up once someone believes they will never be called to account: a casual cruelty at work because no one senior is watching, a private dishonesty because no one will ever check. Majesty is the corrective to exactly that calculation, not because Allah needs the deniers frightened into line, but because the calculation itself was always false. Someone was watching. Something was held. The ego that built an entire private life on the bet that no one was keeping a record loses nothing of its dignity by being told the truth plainly: the record exists, and it sits with the one whose patience, not whose forgetfulness, has been the only reason it has not yet been opened.
