Al-Muzzammil 73:14
يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ ٱلْأَرْضُ وَٱلْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَثِيبًا مَّهِيلًا
“On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The mountains, the oldest proof anyone has for the word solid, will one day pour like sand through open fingers.
A reflection
Your 'solid as a rock' has an expiry date
Wa kānati al-jibālu kathīban mahīlā. And the mountains will become a heap of pouring sand.
Every language has a phrase like 'solid as a rock'. Mountains are the oldest image human beings have reached for whenever they wanted to describe something permanent, unmovable, beyond question. A centuries-old family business is marketed as rock solid. A trusted friend is called the rock of the family. The phrase works because mountains genuinely look eternal; they outlast every generation that has ever stood and looked up at them.
This ayah takes that exact image, the strongest metaphor humanity has for permanence, and dissolves it. Not cracked, not worn down slowly by weather over centuries, which mountains do in any case. Poured out, like sand through fingers, all at once, on a single Day.
If the mountains themselves have no independent permanence of their own, nothing does, except what He sustains. Every 'rock solid' thing a person leans on, a career, a reputation built over decades, a health that has never failed them yet, a certainty they have never had reason to doubt, borrows its appearance of permanence from the same Hand that will one day pour the actual mountains flat. This is not told to frighten the reader into submission for its own sake; Allah needs nothing from anyone's fear (35:15). It is told so that whatever currently plays the role of your own unshakeable rock gets measured against the real, only lasting foundation, and not mistaken for one itself.
There is a particular pride that quietly builds up around anything that has never yet failed you: the health never seriously tested, the income never seriously threatened, the reputation never seriously questioned. That untested record gets mistaken for proof of your own stability, your own good judgement, your own control, rather than what it actually is, a gift that has simply not yet been withdrawn. Ego loves nothing more than an unbroken streak, because an unbroken streak lets it forget it was ever dependent on anything at all. Mountains had the longest unbroken streak available to any created thing, and even they will not keep it.
