At-Takwir 81:3
وَإِذَا ٱلْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ
“And when the mountains are removed”
Saheeh International
Essence
The mountains people climbed to be safe will themselves be set travelling like a caravan; the only high ground left will be His mercy.
A reflection
I will climb a mountain
As the flood rose, Nūḥ (as) called to his son to board the ark. The son had a better plan. 'I will take refuge on a mountain; it will protect me from the water'. His father answered: 'There is no protector today from the command of Allah, except for the one on whom He has mercy'. Then a wave came between them (11:42–43).
That young man is not a cartoon villain. He is every one of us who has trusted our own high ground. For the first hearers, the mountain was the very picture of what does not move. The lexicons record that a man who would not be shifted was called a mountain. Diggers who struck rock their tools could not bite said they had 'reached the mountain'. If anything could save you, surely it was that.
This ayah removes the last mountain. Suyyirat: the mountains are set travelling, made to move like a caravan on the road. The thing people climbed to escape the flood becomes a thing on the move itself.
We all have our mountains. The savings that mean we will never need anyone. The qualifications that mean no one can question us. The reputation that means a scandal would never stick. The quiet pride that says 'I have always coped, I always will'. None of these are wrong to have. The danger is climbing them instead of boarding what Allah has sent.
Is this a display of power meant to make us grovel? Listen to the father's sentence again. It ends with mercy: 'except for the one on whom He has mercy'. The mountains are moved so that every false refuge falls away and the true one becomes visible. He needs nothing from us. Whoever strives, strives for himself (29:6).
The ego wants to be its own mountain: self-made, self-sufficient, answerable to no one. On that Day every mountain is walking. The only high ground left is His mercy, and it was offered all along, like a boat at the door.
