Al-Muzzammil · Makki · ayah 16 of 20
Al-Muzzammil 73:16
فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ أَخْذًا وَبِيلًا
“But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure.”
Saheeh International
Essence
One word, disobeyed, undid a man who thought himself beyond anyone's reach; power this total had never actually been his to begin with.
A reflection
The grip underneath every other grip
Fa-akhadhnāhu akhdhan wabīlā. So We seized him with a ruinous seizure.
Pharaoh held, by any worldly measure, the most total power available to a human being in his time: an empire, an army, priests and magicians at his command, and a claim, recorded elsewhere, that he knew of no god above himself. Egos built on power this complete rarely stop to imagine a grip stronger than their own. There is usually no one left standing close enough to suggest one exists.
This ayah names that grip anyway, directly, and shows it closing. Not a rival king, not a rebellion, not a conspiracy among his own advisors. Akhadhnahu, We seized him, the same verb repeated once for emphasis in its own intensified form, as if ordinary seizing would not have been enough to make the point land.
The humbling in this is not aimed at Pharaoh alone, long dead and unable to hear it. It is aimed at anyone, now, who has quietly started to believe their own position, wealth or control is total enough to answer to no one. However complete a person's grip on their own circumstances looks from the outside, it was always held inside a larger grip they had simply stopped noticing. Pharaoh is proof that forgetting this does not make it any less true.
There is a particular arrogance that grows specifically out of being obeyed for a very long time without interruption. Every command given and carried out without question teaches the one giving it, slowly and almost invisibly, that this is simply how reality responds to him. Pharaoh had decades of exactly that lesson reinforced daily, by an entire court built to agree with him. This ayah is the correction to precisely that false education: reality, it turns out, was never actually responding to his will at all. It had simply not yet been asked to respond otherwise.
