Al-Muzzammil 73:17
فَكَيْفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرْتُمْ يَوْمًا يَجْعَلُ ٱلْوِلْدَٰنَ شِيبًا
“Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white-haired?[1783]”
Saheeh International
Essence
A Day heavy enough to age a child asks one honest question now, while there is still time to prepare for it.
A reflection
A scene, not just an image
Yawman yajʿalu al-wildāna shībā. A Day that turns children grey-haired.
The commentators fill in what makes that Day heavy enough to do this. A widely authenticated hadith describes Allah calling, 'O Adam', and Adam answering, 'Here I am, at Your service, all good is in Your hands.' He is told: bring out the share for the Fire. He asks what that share is. The answer: out of every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine. The Companions, hearing this, were visibly shaken, and the Prophet ﷺ immediately followed it with reassurance about where the believers among them would stand. One version names this exact moment, stated plainly, as when the young turn grey-haired.
That detail changes how the ayah should be read. It is not reaching for a vague, poetic image of a hard day in the abstract. It is naming a specific, described scene, a calling to account so total in scale that even the youngest, least burdened people present are visibly changed by simply witnessing it. The ayah's question, how will you guard yourselves, is addressed to a Day with content like that behind it, not to a generic warning left deliberately unspecified.
Notice, too, what the Prophet ﷺ did immediately after delivering a number that genuinely frightened the people listening. He did not leave them sitting in that fear. He followed it at once with hope, telling them he expected them to be a quarter, then a third, then half of the people of Paradise, each claim met with the believers' own call of Allahu akbar. The severity of the scene and the reassurance that followed it arrived in the very same breath, from the very same mouth. A warning this stark was never meant to be heard without the hope that was deliberately placed right alongside it.
