Al-Muddaththir 74:16

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا

“No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.”

Saheeh International

Essence

No: the wanting was never the real problem; the real problem is what he has done with what he was already shown.

A reflection

The word that stops a sentence cold

Kalla is not a soft disagreement. The lexicons treat it as a hard stop, a particle used to reject something just said or implied, closer to absolutely not than to a measured correction. After four ayat describing wealth, sons and ease given without limit, and a fifth describing his hope for even more, this one word slams a door that has been standing wide open through the entire passage so far.

What makes the placement striking is what exactly gets rejected. Kalla does not deny that he was given all of it; none of that is in question anywhere in this passage. It denies that giving him more would ever actually be the right response to what he has shown himself to be. The implied request, that his wanting should be satisfied the way it has been satisfied every time before, meets an answer sharper than simple refusal: not just no, but no, because something else entirely is actually true about you, something this word is about to name directly.

This single syllable marks the precise hinge of the whole passage. Everything before it has been description: what he was given. Everything after it is verdict: what he did with it. The particle itself is the turn, and it turns hard enough that a reader should feel the change in register immediately, the same way a conversation changes the instant someone says no, stop, that is not what is actually happening here.
