Al-Muddaththir 74:21

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

“Then he considered [again];”

Saheeh International

Essence

He looked again, as if looking harder a second time could change what the truth had already shown him the first.

A reflection

Looking is not the same as seeing

This root means turning the eyes toward something to take it in, studying it, giving it attention. The lexicons are careful to note what the word does not guarantee: naẓar is the act of looking, regardless of whether real understanding actually follows from it. A person can look directly at something for a long time and come away having genuinely seen nothing new at all. The verb describes the gaze, not the comprehension the gaze is supposed to produce.

This distinction is exactly what makes this one-word ayah so pointed after everything that has come before it. He has already thought the matter over at length, in the uniquely intense sense the previous ayat described, and already calculated his position with care. Now he looks again, a further act of apparent attention, and the whole weight of this short verse rests on the gap this root itself makes available: he looked, but nothing suggests he actually saw anything he had not already seen and already decided to dismiss.

The same root elsewhere describes the earth itself, after rain, said to look out as its first green shoots appear, a looking that genuinely produces new growth and new life. This man's looking produces nothing of the kind. It is the same verb, aimed in the same direction as ever, yielding nothing new, because the looking was never actually searching for anything his mind had not already closed off in advance.

This distinction between looking and seeing has an obvious afterlife well beyond this one ayah. A person can read the same difficult feedback twice, attend the same important conversation fully present in body and absent in attention, scroll past the same warning sign on a chart or a relationship for months without it registering as the warning it actually is. The eyes do their job faithfully every time. What determines whether anything changes afterward was never really about the eyes at all.
