Al-Muddaththir 74:26

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ

“I will drive him into Saqar.[1793]”

Saheeh International

Essence

A man who spent every word avoiding specifics finally meets a sentence that names him directly and leaves nothing vague at all.

A reflection

The same contact, warming or consuming

This root describes contact with fire, and the lexicons are careful to preserve both faces of that contact rather than only the frightening one. The same letters describe warming oneself at a fire on a cold night, gathering close to a flame that comforts. They also describe being made to burn in one, held against the same element that, in another context, simply gives warmth. One root, one kind of contact, and the outcome depends entirely on the terms under which it happens.

This ayah uses the form that makes someone else enter the fire, uslihi, I will cause him to burn in it, a causative act rather than an invitation to warmth. The man elsewhere in the Quran who approaches fire hoping to bring a burning branch back to warm his family meets the same root in its gentler face. This man meets its other face entirely, not because the root changed meaning, but because the terms of his own contact with the truth, avoided rather than approached honestly, determined which side of this single root would eventually apply to him.

There is something fitting in one root holding both outcomes rather than two separate words existing for comfort and consequence. The same element that could have been approached for warmth, had the truth been faced rather than evaded, becomes instead the specific consequence of having turned away from it as thoroughly as the previous ayat described.

This also offers a useful corrective to a common misreading of consequence more generally, the assumption that reward and punishment are built from entirely unrelated materials, one gentle and one harsh by nature. The lexicon's own evidence suggests otherwise, at least in this case. The same contact can comfort or consume, and what decides which is not the fire itself but the posture of the one approaching it, sought honestly or turned away from until it could no longer be avoided.
