Al-Muddaththir 74:28

لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ

“It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],”

Saheeh International

Essence

No plea for mercy works here, and nothing is ever counted too small for it to bother with.

A reflection

The one plea this fire refuses

This root means lasting, remaining, what is still standing once everything else has gone. The lexicons preserve a specific, vivid use of it worth holding onto here: a defeated man, beaten in battle and facing total ruin, would cry out al-baqiyya, spare us, leave something of us, a plea for whatever mercy might still allow some remainder to survive the defeat.

La tubqi, it does not spare, is the direct negation of exactly that plea. This is not a generic statement that the fire is severe. It is a specific answer to the one cry a person facing total ruin would instinctively reach for, the oldest plea available for mercy in the face of defeat, and the answer given here is a flat refusal of it. There is no remainder left standing, because the one request historically made in situations exactly this desperate has already been ruled out before anyone could voice it.

This specificity matters. A vague description of severity leaves room for a reader to imagine some unstated exception, some version of partial survival. Naming, through this one root, the precise plea this consequence refuses removes that imagined exception entirely, closing off even the hope of a plea the lexicons show people have always reached for first.
