Al-Mursalat 77:13

لِيَوْمِ ٱلْفَصْلِ

“For the Day of Judgement.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The answer finally lands: for the Day of Decision, when truth and falsehood are parted exactly at the seam that was always there, not cut arbitrarily anywhere else.

A reflection

A cut at the joint, not a hack through bone

Faṣl is a butcher's precision, not a soldier's violence. The lexicons picture it through the mafṣil, the natural joint where two bones meet, and the skilled hand that finds that exact seam rather than hacking through solid bone to force a separation wherever is convenient. A clean parting at a true joint takes almost no force at all, because the gap was always there, waiting to be found.

That is the picture behind naming the Hereafter's reckoning yawm al-faṣl, the Day of the Joint, the Day of Decision. It is tempting to imagine divine judgement as something closer to the soldier's hack: an external force imposing a verdict onto a situation that was genuinely, ambiguously mixed, truth and falsehood tangled together with no natural line between them, until Allah simply decides, by sheer power, where the cut will fall. This ayah's own vocabulary resists that picture. The separation on that Day is a faṣl, found at the joint, not invented at a convenient point. The line between what was true and what was false in a person's life already exists, now and throughout their life, however blurred it may currently appear from the inside.

This matters for how you treat your own conduct today. If judgement day genuinely finds a joint rather than inventing a line, then the actual seam between your honesty and your self-deception, your sincerity and your performance, already exists right now, in this very moment, whether or not you can clearly see it yourself. The Day does not create that distinction. It reveals one that was already quietly there.
