Al-Mursalat 77:16

أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

“Did We not destroy the former peoples?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Did We not destroy the earlier peoples: a question that assumes you already know the answer, because the evidence is still visible in the ground.

A reflection

A question that already knows its answer

This ayah does not state its claim; it asks it, in a form Arabic uses specifically to confirm something the listener already half knows: did We not destroy the earlier peoples? The question mark is doing persuasive work a flat statement could not do on its own. A flat claim can be waved past; a question that expects agreement forces the listener to actually locate the answer in their own memory before they can move on.

The first audience of this surah did not need archaeology to answer it. The ruins of Thamud sat along trade routes they themselves travelled; the fate of 'Ad was carried in poetry recited at their own gatherings. The question was not introducing unfamiliar information. It was pointing at evidence the listeners already possessed and had, until that moment, declined to connect to their own situation.

A fair sceptical question follows naturally: isn't citing destroyed ancient peoples a fairly weak argument, since plenty of civilisations have simply declined through ordinary causes, war, climate, economic collapse, with no divine judgement required to explain any of it? The ayah's claim is not that natural causes were absent. Famine, invasion, and internal collapse are real mechanisms the Quran elsewhere names directly. The claim is about what stood behind those ordinary mechanisms in these specific, named cases: peoples who were warned plainly and repeatedly by a messenger sent directly to them, who rejected that warning with open eyes, and whose rejection is recorded right alongside their ending in the very same accounts, not natural decline treated in the abstract, but an ending tied, case by case, to a particular, documented refusal that history itself still remembers and names.
