Al-Mursalat 77:15

وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

“Woe,[1819] that Day, to the deniers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Woe, that Day, to the deniers: a sentence so exact it will return nine more times in this surah, once for every fresh thing they chose not to believe.

A reflection

An itemised bill, not a lump sum

This single sentence returns ten times across this surah, after the earlier peoples' destruction, after the stages of a person's own creation, after the earth holding the living and the dead, after fruit and cattle, after Hell itself is described. One classical commentator explains why directly: the woe is repeated because it is shared out among the deniers in proportion to what each specific thing they denied. Denying one sign is its own distinct offence, carrying its own distinct share, separate from the offence of denying another sign entirely, however similar the two might look from a distance.

That is a strikingly different model of judgement from the one most people default to, a single vague verdict covering a whole life: good enough, not good enough, pass or fail. This ayah's repetition argues for something closer to an itemised bill than a lump sum. A hospital statement that lists each procedure separately, each with its own line and its own cost, treats a patient more exactly than a single unexplained total ever could, because it refuses to let any one charge hide inside the average of all the others.

Applied here, the picture is exacting rather than vague: this specific refusal to see the signs in your own making, this specific dismissal of the earth's design, this specific contempt for a warning once it was heard, each gets its own line, its own weight, its own woe. Nothing is permitted to dissolve quietly into a general, forgettable impression of having "not really believed". The precision is itself the justice. A verdict that named only the whole, a single pass or fail stamped across an entire life, would have let every particular refusal quietly hide inside the average of all the rest, never named, never weighed on its own specific terms.
