Al-Mursalat 77:25
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ كِفَاتًا
“Have We not made the earth a container”
Saheeh International
Essence
Did We not make the earth a gathering place: the same word used for calling children home at night, now naming how it holds the living and keeps the dead.
A reflection
Called in, not merely contained
Kifat, the word this ayah gives the earth, grows from a root meaning to gather something close to yourself, and the lexicons reach for a specific, warm domestic picture to explain it: a parent calling children inside at night, drawing them in from the open dark toward safety and shelter before the household settles for sleep. That is the picture standing behind calling the whole earth kifatan, a gatherer, in the very next line explained as holding the living on its surface and the dead within it.
This is a strikingly different image from the ones that might come more naturally to a modern reader thinking about the ground beneath their feet: inert real estate, a surface to be built on, a resource to be measured in acres and mineral rights. The Quran's own word reaches instead for the picture of an attentive parent's call, the earth not merely holding people the way an empty container holds whatever is placed in it, but actively gathering them the way a mother gathers her children in before dark, with intention and care built into the very motion of the verb.
Hold both halves of that gathering together rather than letting the mind slide quickly past the second to avoid its weight. The same earth that gathers the living into homes, cities, gardens, and daily life also gathers the dead into itself at the end of each life, not abandoning them to be lost or scattered, but drawing them in with the same underlying motion as a parent's call. Burial, read through this word, is not exile from the world's care. It is one more instance of the same gathering that has been holding you, without a single day's interruption, since before you could walk.
