Al-Ghashiyah · Makki · ayah 20 of 26
Al-Ghashiyah 88:20
وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ
“And at the earth - how it is spread out?”
Saheeh International
Essence
Last, look down: the earth spread like a flat roof for living on, a floor laid long before anyone claimed a strip.
A reflection
A floor older than any title deed
A man buys a hillside field and, in his first week, nails a sign to the gate: PRIVATE LAND. KEEP OUT. His name is on the deeds. He walks the boundary on Sunday afternoons with real satisfaction. The hill under his boots was there before his grandfather's grandfather, and it will be there when his own name has worn off the gatepost.
The ayah asks us to look at the earth, how it was suṭiḥat: spread and levelled. The commentators say it was spread with smoothing and preparing, so that it became a cradle for whoever turns over on it. A modern commentary adds: made ready for people to settle on.
The word for earth, arḍ, has its own humility. The lexicons define it as whatever is low and faces the sky. Good land was arīḍa: soft to tread, quick to grow. And a person could be arīḍ lil-khayr: lowly, and naturally inclined to good, like such ground.
Put our pride of ownership beside that. We argue over boundaries, fences and inheritances measured in feet. We sign our names on deeds for a strip of a floor someone else laid. The earth was spread long before any of us arrived, and not one of us did the levelling.
Is it boasting for Allah to point to it? When a host shows a guest the room prepared for him, no one calls it vanity. The Quran speaks in exactly that voice. It is He who made the earth tame for you, so walk its paths and eat of His provision. And to Him is the rising (67:15). The floor is pointed out so that the guest will know whose house it is, and where the house leads.
