Al-Mursalat 77:31
لَّا ظَلِيلٍ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱللَّهَبِ
“[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."”
Saheeh International
Essence
The hope the last ayah allowed to form is closed off at once: no real shade at all, and no shelter from the flame beside it.
A reflection
Called shade, then stripped of the word that makes shade shade
Arabic has an intensified form of the word for shade — ẓalīl, something that truly, reliably cools, the kind of shelter you would trust your whole body to on the hottest day. This ayah takes the "shade" just named in the previous one and flatly denies it that exact quality. It is called shade, and then, in the very next breath, denied the one feature that would make the name honest.
That is a precise kind of cruelty, built entirely out of grammar. A plain description would have skipped the word "shade" altogether and gone straight to "fire." Instead the text lets the word stand, lets the traveller's hope attach to it, and only then removes the single quality the word exists to promise. The shelter keeps its name. It loses everything the name was supposed to guarantee.
This is worth sitting with longer than a single reading allows, because it describes something sharper than disappointment. Ordinary disappointment is discovering that a promised thing was smaller than hoped. This is discovering that a promised thing was never the thing at all — that the label survived completely intact while everything underneath it was hollowed out. The commentaries read the structure of the two ayat together exactly this way: first hope extended, then hope specifically and deliberately withdrawn, word by word.
Anyone who has waited for a result, an apology or a diagnosis knows a smaller version of this gap between a label and what it turns out to contain. A letter arrives marked "outcome enclosed"; the envelope is real, the label is accurate, and still the contents can be nothing like what the word on the front prepared you to expect. The grammar of hope and the substance behind it are two separate things, and this ayah is built entirely around the space that can open up between them.
