Al-Mursalat 77:30
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ ظِلٍّ ذِى ثَلَـٰثِ شُعَبٍ
“Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns”
Saheeh International
Essence
The destination is called "shade" — the very word for shelter and relief — and it is made entirely from the fire it cannot shelter anyone from.
A reflection
Shelter built from the very thing it cannot shelter you from
Ẓill is the ordinary word for shade — the relief a tree gives a traveller, the cool side of a wall at noon, the thing every desert culture learned to value before almost anything else. It is one of the kindest words in the whole language: protection from a sun that would otherwise be unbearable.
The commentaries describe exactly what this particular "shade" is: the smoke of Hell, risen so thick and so fierce that it forks into three separate columns as it climbs, the way an ordinary fire's smoke can be seen to split and billow in more than one direction when it burns hot enough. It looks, from a distance, like the one thing a traveller in unbearable heat would be relieved to find.
That is the entire cruelty of the word choice. A plain threat would have simply named the fire. Instead, the exact same vocabulary that means rescue is handed to something that offers none, so that the hope the word carries arrives at the destination and finds nothing there to answer it. The next ayah will say so directly — this shade does not shade and does not help against the flame — but the sentence is built so that the reader feels the false promise first, before being told it was false. That order is deliberate: disappointment lands harder when hope was allowed to form first.
There is a reason this method is used rather than a blunter one. A warning that simply says "fire" can be braced for; the mind has a category ready for it. A warning that borrows the vocabulary of rescue and only then reveals what it actually is cannot be braced for in the same way, because the very words meant to prepare a person for relief are the words doing the deceiving. That is a harsher mechanism than heat alone, and the ayah does not soften it.
