Al-Mursalat 77:38

هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ۖ جَمَعْنَـٰكُمْ وَٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

“This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every denier who ever lived, from the very first to the very last, answers on the same day, in the same gathering, with no later queue left to hide in.

A reflection

The day that finally tells truth from its disguise

Faṣl is the word for a clean separation — the same root that names weaning a child from its mother, a decisive ruling that ends a dispute, the clause that divides one sentence from the next. The commentaries gloss this Day directly: the day truth is finally and visibly separated from falsehood, the one who was right from the one who merely argued as if they were.

That is a different image from simply "the day of reckoning" or "the day of judgement," phrases easy to hear as abstractions. Faṣl pictures something more physical: two things that have been tangled together, often deliberately, finally pulled cleanly apart so that no one watching can mistake which was which any longer. In this life, truth and falsehood can look confusingly similar for long stretches — the convincing liar, the sincere-sounding excuse, the wrongdoing dressed in the language of justice. This is named as the Day all of that tangling finally ends.

The weaning sense of the same root adds something worth sitting with too: a weaned child has been separated from something it depended on, often against its own wishes, because the separation serves its growth rather than its immediate comfort. This Day, in its own much larger way, is also a forced separation from something many spent a lifetime leaning on instead of the truth — and, like weaning, it comes whether the one being separated is ready for it or not.

There is a reason a word this physical was chosen over a more abstract one. An abstract word for judgement can be nodded at and set aside; a word that pictures an actual, felt separation is harder to file away as theory. The ayah does not ask the reader to accept a concept. It asks them to picture something being pulled cleanly apart, and to recognise which side of that pulling they would currently be standing on.
