Al-Mursalat 77:37
وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
“Woe, that Day, to the deniers.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The sixth "woe that Day to the deniers" — closing the quietest scene the refrain has followed yet: not fire or sparks, just silence and a withheld chance to speak.
A reflection
A refrain that can close a loud scene or a silent one
This exact line was first met at 77:15, and its full treatment lives there. Each return closes a different case; this is the sixth, and it follows the quietest scene yet.
The previous return (77:34) closed five ayat of vivid, physical description — fire, false shelter, flying sparks. This one closes just two short ayat with no imagery at all: a day they do not speak, and are not given permission to try. No flame, no colour, no scale. Only an absence — of words, of excuse, of any remaining hearing left to grant.
That the same four words can close both a scene built from vivid sensory detail and a scene built entirely from what is missing says something about the refrain's own reach. It is not tied to any one register of fear. It answers whatever has just been shown, loud or silent, with the same settled weight — which is, in its own way, more unsettling than if the refrain only ever followed the dramatic scenes and left the quiet ones to speak for themselves.
