Al-Mursalat 77:7

إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَوَٰقِعٌ

“Indeed, what you are promised is to occur.”

Saheeh International

Essence

After six oaths, the answer lands: what you are promised is already waqi', as settled as a bird that has folded its wings and come to rest.

A reflection

A promise He owed no one

One sense the lexicons record for waqaʿa is a due becoming binding, a reward falling due on the one who owes it, as settled and non-negotiable as rain reaching the ground it was always heading toward. Applied to Allah, that sense sits beside a theme repeated elsewhere in the Quran and in the hadith qudsi tradition: Allah has written mercy upon Himself, obligated Himself to a promise that nothing outside Him ever forced Him to make.

Human promises rarely work this way without pressure. A person usually honours a commitment because breaking it costs them something: a reputation, a relationship, a contract enforceable in court. Remove every consequence and watch how many promises quietly evaporate. Pride resists being bound by anything it was not somehow compelled into.

Allah needed no court, no reputation among equals, no fear of consequence, to make this promise binding on Himself. He simply made it so, which is a far greater thing than a promise kept under threat of penalty. Arrogance in a person looks like refusing commitments unless cornered into them; true greatness, which only Allah possesses without borrowing it from circumstance, looks like binding yourself freely to a promise you were never going to be forced to keep. There is no higher proof of trustworthiness than this: a word made binding purely because the one speaking it is good, with nothing external compelling the keeping of it, and every reason, were He the kind of being pride describes, to have kept the matter open instead.
