An-Naba 78:16

وَجَنَّـٰتٍ أَلْفَافًا

“And gardens of entwined growth.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The list of signs ends in gardens so thick they cover the ground, one rain giving a hundred tastes: a picture of the Garden promised.

A reflection

One rain, a hundred tastes

At a glittering launch party, a perfumer lifts a small bottle and calls it 'my creation'. The room applauds. The scent really is beautiful, and she has spent two years balancing its forty notes. But every one of those notes began as a petal, a bark, a resin or a peel, grown somewhere by rain she did not send.

The sources describe the gardens of this ayah with a wonder that deflates that kind of pride. One explains that they hold fruits of every kind: different colours, different tastes, different scents, all gathered together in one small patch of earth. He links it to another ayah. There are neighbouring plots, with vines, crops and palms, watered with one water. And Allah makes some better than others to eat (13:4).

One water. A hundred tastes. The same rain falls on the lemon and the fig, the rose and the mint. Out of identical drops comes sourness and sweetness, fragrance and colour. No human hand arranged that variety. We only pick from it.

The ego likes to believe it is the source of its gifts: my taste, my eye, my creation. In truth our best work is choosing well among things given. A good perfumer, a good cook and a good gardener are all skilled selectors from a store they did not fill. That is worth being proud of in a small way. It is not worth mistaking for making.

Does Allah point to His gardens because He needs admiration? He is free of need. The sources treat the whole list as evidence and favour for people's sake. The reminder keeps our talents in their proper place: real, valuable, and borrowed.

Next time you taste something wonderful, pause before praising the cook. Praise her too, gladly. But first remember the one rain from which every flavour on the plate was drawn.
