An-Naba 78:32

حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَـٰبًا

“Gardens and grapevines”

Saheeh International

Essence

The triumph is pictured as treasured, walled gardens and vines heavy with fresh grapes: the best the first hearers knew, and only the beginning.

A reflection

The apple of the eye

At a crowded swimming gala, a grandfather sits in the stands among two hundred parents. Children are diving and splashing in eight lanes. His eyes never leave lane four, where his granddaughter is swimming her first race. Everything else in the hall is a blur around that one bright point.

The root of ḥadāʾiq holds that kind of focus. The lexicons say it means one thing encircling another. The dark centre of the eye is its ḥadaqa, ringed by white; to stare hard is taḥdīq. A ḥadīqa was land enclosed by a wall or rising ground. Only prized palms and vines were walled in like that. These are established senses.

A classical commentator adds a telling condition. A ḥadīqa is a garden of palms, vines and trees surrounded by walls. If there are no walls around it, he says, it is not called a ḥadīqa. One early lexicographer explains the name another way. It is a piece of land with water, likened to the pupil of the eye in its shape and in holding water.

So the gardens promised here are not open scrubland. They are the kind of garden people wall in because they treasure it, and water because they love it. They are the apple of someone's eye.

That changes how the ayah feels. The reward of the mindful is not a generic prize handed out in bulk. It is a treasured place, enclosed, watered and kept, like the grandfather's gaze on lane four. And the One who prepared it does not look away.

It is worth remembering the next time you feel unseen. Before any garden was walled for you, you were already in view.
