An-Naba 78:15
لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا
“That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation”
Saheeh International
Essence
The rain was sent with a purpose: that Allah might bring grain for people and green growth for their animals out of the ground.
A reflection
Bread made 'from scratch'
A supermarket bakery puts up a new sign above its shelves. It promises bread baked from scratch every morning. The bread is good, and the bakers really do start early. But 'scratch', if you follow it back, is a bag of flour. The flour is a field of wheat. And the wheat is a seed that someone buried and Someone else brought out.
'That We may bring out by it grain and plants.' The verb is Allah's: nukhrija, We bring out. The sources describe what He brings out in plain terms. There is grain that people eat and store, like wheat and barley. There is green growth for grazing animals, and fresh greens eaten as they are.
Here is where the ego needs quiet correction. Human beings are extraordinary farmers, millers and bakers. Every loaf carries real skill and real sweat. But not one of us has ever brought a single ear of wheat out of the ground. We bury the seed and wait. We water, weed and hope. The bringing out belongs to Him.
We forget this easily because food arrives so tidily now: wrapped, labelled and priced. The label names the bakery and the brand. It never names the One who brought the grain out of the dark soil. Pride grows in that gap. It starts to believe that what it can buy, it must somehow have made.
Is this Allah seeking our praise? He is free of need. Our thanks add nothing to Him. The reminder is for us, so that we eat as guests at a table laid by Another, not as owners congratulating ourselves.
The bakery's sign is not a lie. It simply begins the story halfway through. Next time you tear a piece of bread, begin it where it really began. Say bismillāh, and remember who did the part no baker can do.
