An-Naba 78:6

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَـٰدًا

“Have We not made the earth a resting place?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Before you arrived, the ground was smoothed and spread for you like a cradle; the One who prepared it so carefully does nothing in vain.

A reflection

The cot in the garage

A man of forty-five, known at work as self-made, spends a Saturday helping his parents clear their garage. Under a dust sheet is a small wooden cot. His mother tells him his father built it in the evenings, the winter before he was born. The man runs his hand along the rail. He had never once thought about who made his first bed.

'Have We not made the earth a mihād?' The question is not asking for information. The sources explain that this form of question draws out an admission: yes, You did. And mihād is a bed smoothed and spread, a cradle made ready. The ground under every human life was prepared before any of us arrived.

This is where the ego starts to shrink. We talk about what we have built: the house, the business, the reputation, the garden. We rarely talk about what we were standing on while we built it. Every achievement anyone has ever boasted of was done on a floor someone else laid. Pride is forgetting the cot.

The sources draw out a second point from the same question. The One who is great in power, and whose making is this wise and this vast, deserves to be heeded when He warns. The earth is not only a gift. It is His signature on the argument that follows.

A doubt can surface here. Why would Allah keep reminding people of what He has given? Does He need them to notice, or to say thank you? The Quran answers elsewhere in plain terms. 'O people, you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Free of need' (35:15). The reminder is not for Him. It is for the forgetful man in the garage. He needs to remember whose hands shaped his first bed before he can walk humbly on the ground.

The cot did not make the father greater. Noticing it made the son wiser. So with the earth: Allah loses nothing if we walk over it without a thought. We lose the one thing that keeps our pride at its true size.
