An-Nazi'at 79:3

وَٱلسَّـٰبِحَـٰتِ سَبْحًا

“And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming[1835]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The heavens are full of beings gliding to His command like swimmers through water, and the same letters that name their swimming name our glorifying.

A reflection

A sea with no far shore

A small girl on a beach asks her father where the sea ends. He points to the horizon. She walks down to the waterline, looks out, and asks again. From where she stands, the end of the sea is simply the place where her eyes give up.

The third oath of this surah is by al-sābiḥāt: those who swim, or glide. Most of the sources say these are angels, moving through the heavens on His errands the way a swimmer moves through water. One classical reflection takes the image somewhere breathtaking. The angels, it says, have been swimming since the moment they were created. They swim in the seas of Allah's majesty, and they will never reach a shore. There is no end to their swimming because there is no end to His greatness.

Whether or not you hold that reading, it exposes something in us. We are the girl at the waterline. We assume the edge of what we know is the edge of what there is. We read a few books, hear a few talks, and quietly decide we have got the measure of Allah. Pride is mostly a failure of horizon. It is thinking the sea stops where our sight stops.

The angels have no such illusion. The Quran says those near Him 'are not too proud to worship Him, nor do they tire. They glorify Him night and day and do not flag' (21:19–20). Creatures far greater than us have been swimming for longer than we can imagine, and they are not bored. The sea is still new to them.

A doubt surfaces here. If angels glorify Him without pause, does He need it? Is this a Lord who must be surrounded by praise? The Quran answers directly: 'O people, you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy' (35:15). Their glorifying adds nothing to Him. It is simply what it looks like to see Him truly. Wonder is the natural response of a creature who has glimpsed how deep the water goes.

The humbling thought is not that we know little. It is that the more you learn of Him, the further the horizon moves. That is not a failure. It is the beginning of worship.
