Adh-Dhariyat 51:56

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”

Saheeh International

Essence

You were made the way a pen is cut, for one purpose by the One who cut you: to worship Him, and in that purpose you profit, not He.

A reflection

The pen does not choose what it is for

One of the plainest commentaries explains this ayah with a picture from a writing desk. 'I sharpened this pen to write with it.' The one who cut the pen decided what it was for, before it ever touched paper.

Picture a calligrapher with a reed and a small knife. Before a single letter is formed, she cuts the nib. She slices the tip at an angle, splits it a little, tests it on her thumbnail. The angle is chosen for one particular script. The reed does not choose what it will write. Its purpose is settled in the cutting.

The lexicons give the root of khalaqtu, 'I created', an image of exactly this kind, and it is established. A leatherworker spreads a hide and measures it before cutting: this much for a water-skin, this much for a boot. That measuring is khalq. Creation, in this word, is making to a measure and for a use.

We live in an age that tells everyone to design their own purpose. Find your why. Author your life. There is truth in the call to live deliberately. But this ayah quietly corrects the deepest part of it. Your purpose was not left for you to invent. It was measured into you by the One who cut you. Wa-mā khalaqtu: I did not create.

This is where the ego shrinks. Pride wants to be its own origin and its own goal. The ayah says: you are a made thing, made for something. That is humbling. It is also a relief.

A doubt follows naturally. Is it not self-centred for God to make beings in order to be worshipped? The next ayah answers directly: 'I want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me' (51:57). One classical scholar of the heart put it this way: He did not create them out of need, nor to gain from them. He created them out of generosity, so that they would worship Him and gain everything.
