An-Nazi'at 79:43

فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكْرَىٰهَآ

“In what [position] are you that you should mention it?[1849]”

Saheeh International

Essence

A gentle question turns attention from the date of the Hour to the task in hand: you are here to remind.

A reflection

A gentle redirection, even for the best of people

A devoted mother spends hours every week researching which university her six-year-old son might one day attend. She reads league tables and forums late into the night. One evening her own mother, watching, says quietly: 'What has that got to do with you now? Read him a story.' It is not a rebuke. It is a redirection.

This ayah carries a redirection of that kind, addressed to the Prophet ﷺ himself. Fīma anta min dhikrāhā: what have you to do with mentioning it? The sources record a report that the Prophet ﷺ kept being asked about the Hour, and kept asking about it, until this ayah came down. One classical scholar explains: people kept asking him, and in his eagerness to answer them he kept mentioning it and asking about it. So Allah told him that its timing was not his concern. Its knowledge ends with his Lord.

There is great tenderness in that. The Prophet's ﷺ concern was sincere. He wanted to answer people, to convince them, to protect them. Allah did not scold him. He lifted a weight from him that was never his to carry. The date was Allah's; the warning was his.

That pattern appears often in the Quran's words to the Prophet ﷺ. 'Perhaps you would destroy yourself with grief that they do not believe' (26:3). 'You are only a reminder; you are not a controller over them' (88:21–22). His responsibility had limits, and knowing them was a mercy.

Many sincere people carry weights that are not theirs. The parent who tries to guarantee a child's whole future. The activist who feels personally responsible for every injustice. The believer who agonises over questions only Allah can answer. The ayah invites them to put that weight down and pick up the task that is theirs.

What question are you carrying that belongs to Allah? Name it tonight, hand it back to Him, and ask for help with the task in front of you.
