Al-Ghashiyah 88:21

فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ

“So remind, [O Muḥammad]; you are only a reminder.”

Essence

After four signs anyone can see comes one instruction: not to convince, compel or win, but to remind, and leave the rest with Allah.

A reflection

A narrow job, and a freeing one

Innamā anta mudhakkir: you are only a reminder. The word innamā narrows. It draws a line around the job and says: this, and nothing more.

The commentators spell out what sits outside the line. A modern concise commentary says: nothing is asked of you except reminding them; granting them faith is in Allah's hand alone. Another adds: do not grieve over their turning away. You are not there to force them into belief.

For the one addressed first, the Prophet ﷺ, that was a relief as much as a command. He cared so much about people that the Quran told him more than once not to destroy himself with grief. Those who refused were not his burden (18:6; 26:3). This ayah redraws his burden to its proper size. Speak clearly. Point to the signs. Then let go.

Anyone who leads others knows the opposite temptation. Parents who try to install faith in a teenager by force of will. Managers who rewrite every report themselves because nobody does it right. Teachers who take every failed exam as a personal defeat. They carry what was never theirs, and they burn out under it.

A narrow job description can be the most liberating thing a leader receives. It separates what you answer for from what you do not. You answer for clarity, honesty, patience and example. You do not answer for another person's heart.

This does not mean caring less. The Prophet ﷺ never stopped caring. It means caring within the limits Allah set, so that the caring can last. Remind today. Remind tomorrow. And sleep at night, because the outcome was never in your hands.
