“Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.[1861]”

Essence
The One who eased your first road also closes it, and even then He honours you with a grave instead of leaving you exposed.
A reflection
He caused him to die
The ayah does not say 'then he died'. It says amātahu: then He caused him to die. The verb puts death firmly in Allah's hands. No illness, accident or old age owns it. They are only the ways by which His decree arrives.
The lexicons point out a quiet fact about the related word mayyit. It can mean the one who has died, and also the one who will. So the living Prophet ﷺ is told: 'You are mayyit, and they are mayyitūn' (39:30). Mortality is not only a future event. It is a present fact about everyone reading this.
Picture a man who spent two years renovating his house. The last job was the kitchen: new worktops, a tap he chose after weeks of comparing. He finished it on a Sunday and showed it off to his brothers. The following Friday his family stood at his funeral. In the kitchen, the new tap still had its protective film on.
Nothing in that story is unusual. That is what makes it so sobering. Every plan we make is made by someone who is mayyit.
Pride cannot survive a clear look at this ayah. The ego assumes it has time, control and a long future of achievements. Amātahu says: the One who gave you your first breath decides your last. Your projects, titles and possessions will be handled by other people's hands.
A sceptic may ask: why would a merciful God cause death at all? Is death not a failure of His care? One classical commentator answers that death is the bridge between two stages. It stands between the life of trial and the life of recompense. Without it, the test would never end and the reward would never come. 'He created death and life, to test which of you is best in deed' (67:2). Death is not the collapse of the plan. It is part of it.
So this verb does two things at once. It humbles, because no one escapes it. And it steadies, because the One who causes death is the same One who measured, eased and cared for us at every stage before it.
