Az-Zumar 39:42
“Allāh takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”

Essence
Every night Allah takes every soul in sleep, keeps those whose time has come and sends the rest back: each morning is a returned life.
A reflection
The one surrender nobody can refuse
The ayah begins with the name of Allah, placed first, before the verb. One commentary notes what that order does. It restricts the act to Him. It is Allah who takes the souls, and no one else.
Then it names a taking that happens to everyone, every night. Not only at death. And those that have not died, in their sleep.
Think about what that means for human pride. Picture a man who owns three companies, a house on a hill and a reputation for never being outmanoeuvred. He can buy almost anything. But at two in the morning, after a long negotiation, his head begins to drop. He fights it, then loses, in his chair, mid-thought. Every night of his life ends the same way: in a surrender he did not choose and cannot negotiate.
Nobody is exempt. The strongest, the richest, the most celebrated: each one lies down and lets go of everything. Consciousness, control, the ability to defend himself. For several hours he could not tell you his own name.
This is a nightly lesson in humility, written into the body. The ego says: I am in charge of my life. Sleep says: you are not even in charge of being awake. Another Hand takes you, holds you, and decides whether to send you back.
A sceptic might ask whether a God who reminds people of their helplessness simply wants them small. But notice the next word: yursilu, He sends back. The same ayah that shows the power shows the mercy. Most nights, for most of a lifetime, He returns what He took. The point is not to crush the sleeper. It is to make him aware, each morning, of who gave the day back.
