Al-Ghashiyah 88:10
فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ
“In an elevated garden,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The surah opened with a covering that overwhelms; here is a covering that shelters, a garden raised high for those who never climbed over others.
A reflection
Two coverings
At an outdoor wedding in June, a cloudburst arrives out of a clear sky. Within seconds every guest is soaked: the bride's aunts, the caterers, the photographer, the band. Nobody is spared. Then a grandfather lifts the white cloth off the cake table and holds it over the heads of three small grandchildren. The same rain is falling on them. They are giggling, dry, underneath.
The surah began with a covering: al-ghāshiya, the Day that comes over all creation. Now it names another. Janna, garden, comes from a root that means to cover and conceal. Whatever is screened from you has been janna from you. The jinn are named for being hidden. The unborn child, janīn, is covered in the womb. A shield, junna, hides the one who carries it. And a janna is a garden whose trees grow so thick, their branches so interwoven, that they cover the ground and shade everything within.
So the surah holds two coverings in its hands. One comes down on everyone at once, with terror. The other spreads over some, with shade. The first is the Day itself. The second is what the Day opens onto for those who spent their lives under His care.
There is something gentle in that choice of word. Paradise is not first described as bright, or large, or golden. It is described as shade: a place where the sun of a long exposure finally stops beating down.
For anyone living through a season of glare, with no cover and no rest, it helps to know the word waiting at the end. It is not only reward. It is shelter, the kind a grandfather gives with whatever he can lift, given here by the One who needs to lift nothing.
