Al-Ghashiyah 88:12

فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ

“Within it is a flowing spring.”

Saheeh International

Essence

To people who hauled every drop up from wells, the promise is water that runs by itself, needs no channel, and never stops.

A reflection

Water without a bucket or a channel

For the first hearers, water was work. You lowered a leather bucket on a rope into a well and hauled it up, hand over hand. For a field, a camel walked the rope out and back all day. For a garden, someone dug a channel and guarded it against a neighbour who wanted the flow. The lexicons record a land's siqy, its share of water, as something people quarrelled over.

Now the surah describes a spring that is jāriya, running. The root is water in motion, the opposite of water that stands still. The Arabs gave the same name to a ship, a runner on the sea, and to the sun crossing from horizon to horizon.

The commentators add details that would have landed hard on a desert ear. It flows over the ground without a trench, says one; another says it runs for them however they wish. A modern concise commentary says they make it gush and direct it where they please. And it never stops, says a later commentator: to call a spring 'running' is to stress that its flow is never cut off.

Notice, too, that ʿayn, spring, is singular. One classical commentator reads it as a type rather than one spring: springs beyond counting. It works the way 'a soul will know' means every soul (82:5).

There is a tender logic here. The things that cost the most effort in this world are the things the Garden gives most freely. People who spent their lives pulling water up by hand are promised water that comes to them. People who spent their lives guarding a channel are promised a spring nobody needs to guard.

What do you haul up by hand every day, and guard, and worry about losing? The ayah suggests that the Garden is shaped around exactly that ache.
