Al-Ghashiyah 88:17

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ

“Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Before asking anyone to believe in the unseen, the Quran asks them to look properly at the animal they ride: how was it made?

A reflection

The giant that kneels for a child

At a desert livestock fair, a bull camel stands over two metres at the hump. It could break a man's leg with one kick. An eight-year-old boy walks up, takes the thin rope tied to its nose-peg, clicks his tongue, and leads it away through the crowd. The camel follows him like a shadow.

The commentators never tired of that picture. The camel is one of the strongest animals the Arabs knew, yet it softens for a heavy load and yields to a weak leader. A small boy takes its halter and goes wherever he likes with it. It kneels to be loaded, then rises with its burden, something one commentator says no other animal does. It carries loads to distant lands, eats what other beasts refuse, and gives milk, meat and wool.

Now put that beside what we are quietly proud of. The team we manage. The household we run. The influence we have over people. We like to think the docility around us is our achievement: our charm, our authority, our firm hand.

The Quran corrects the story. We subdued the cattle for them, so that some they ride and some they eat (36:72). The camel's obedience was never the boy's doing. It was placed there. Every creature that serves us was made willing by Another.

Someone may ask why Allah points to His own handiwork at all. Is He seeking our admiration? He needs nothing from us; He is the Free of need, the Praised (35:15). The question 'do they not look?' is asked for our sake. It is a rebuke to the one who doubts the Resurrection while riding its evidence. The camel is not there to impress Allah. It is there to humble us, gently, and to lead us home.
